Charisma

[edit]

I do think your summary points out how controversial Darryl was, but I think it fails to show how popular a figure he was. He had fans' support as evidenced by his being voted to start the all-star game year after year. He also heard fan's jeers and taunts, especially, "Darrrrryl." He was truly one of baseball's biggest stars in the late 1980s and became an engaging enigma. People either loved him or loved to hate him.

DAAAAARRRRYL

[edit]

What brought on the chants of "Daaaarrryl"? I remember hearing them in the early 1990's, but never understood why the fans started doing that.

If memory serves, the Boston Red Sox fans started that chant in the 1986 World Series in an effort to distract Strawberry. The chant stuck and became one of the most recognizable chants during that time. Funny thing is, the Mets fans started doing it in addition to the opposing fans.

Actually I think it were Cubs fans who started it first, but the Sox fans made it famous in the WS.

NPOV tag

[edit]

This article seems heavily biassed towards Darryl. Some of the language and the tone of the article is not very encyclopedic either. Saying that he could have beaten Aaron's record is way over the top, especially without a citation. Mglovesfun 00:37, 28 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Though immensly popular, with more than a few highlights in his career, Mr. Strawberry was completely overrated. In fact, he was far more clutch with The Yankees than he almost ever was during his Mets hayday. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 71.125.225.43 (talk) 02:39, 14 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Response

[edit]

I don't have a problem with the article at all. I think it captures everything Darryl Strawberry did on and off the field. It points out his successes as well as his failures. The part about breaking Aaron's record, I remember there was talk about this at the time. I'm not sure if a citation can be found on this, but there was most definitely discussion about it. After 10 years of play he was ahead of Aaron's pace. Aaron, of course, got better with age though.

At one time this article was very biased AGAINST Strawberry. I think it's been cleaned up well.

[edit]

As a fan of Straw, I bet you have no problem with this article. As a fan of baseball in general, I am saddened by this piece. It is nothing but a white-washing of the train-wreck that was Darryl Strawberry, severely downplaying his often derailed career. He could have gone down as a baseball immortal, instead he snorted that away...but you would never guess that from this skewed article. ~krejaton

Agreed. It's time the tag came off unless someone can provide another argument for it to stay. MrPrada 01:24, 21 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

He's a Yankee

[edit]

I suggest that the colors in the article should be Yankees colors not Mets. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.60.37.8 (talk) 23:19, 2 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Isn't he the only (or else one of the few) man to have played for all of the former and current New York baseball teams? (I.e., Giants, Dodgers, Yankees and Mets.) That's a rather stretchy piece of trivia I've heard, but some may find it noteworthy. WHPratt (talk) 14:10, 30 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Petty

[edit]

As a long time Braves fan, I hate Darryl. In fact, the only reason I came here was to see if there was mention of his "Atlanta will never be a baseball town" comment. But when I read that someone listed getting caught stealing gum in 1972 among his "legal and personal problems", I had to take that out. That was so stupid, it was laughable. Wikipedia will never be taken seriously as long as crap like that is allowed to go on. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 71.110.71.246 (talk) 22:41, 16 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I dont think this needs Clean Up as WP suggests, in fact the chronological list of DS's violations & incarcerations is more succinct and likely more readable than the "prose" that WP suggests. 24.0.105.199 (talk) 17:19, 29 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]
